Graduate Architecture Program
The Master of Architecture provides opportunities for scholarly inquiry and research culminating in the Master’s thesis. The program provides for concentrations of study allowing students to pursue their interests and course of study. The Master of Architecture degree is a first professional degree and meets the degree requirement for licensure in architecture. The requirements may increase depending on the undergraduate architecture courses previously taken. The Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies and portfolio review is required for admissions. Application for admissions is initiated through the University’s Graduate School. Transfer students must meet all appropriate accreditation and program requirements prior to admission to the Master of Architecture program.

The Architecture Program consists of a four-year, pre-professional Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies degree and the Master of Architecture professional degree. The pre-professional degree prepares students to enter career fields related to architecture or to enter the professional Master of Architecture degree program. The Master of Architecture qualifies for professional licensure and architectural practice.
In the United States, most state registration boards require a degree from an accredited professional degree program as a prerequisite for licensure. The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), which is the sole agency authorized to accredit U.S. professional degree programs in architecture, recognizes three types of degrees: the Bachelor of Architecture, the Master of Architecture, and the Doctor of Architecture. A program may be granted a 6-year, 3-year, or 2-year term of accreditation, depending on the extent of its conformance with established educational standards.

Master’s degree programs may consist of a pre-professional undergraduate degree and a professional graduate degree, that, when earned sequentially, constitute an accredited professional education. However, the pre-professional degree is not, by itself, recognized as an accredited degree.

The program has three tracks. Track one is for those with a professional bachelor of architecture degree (B.ARCH) from an accredited institution. Track two is for those with a bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) in architectural studies from an institution with an accredited professional degree. Track three is for those with a bachelor’s degree in other disciplines, degrees from non-accredited institutions or if deficiencies appear in the student’s undergraduate work. Those with a degree in another area will need to complete undergraduate preparatory coursework. The courses will be determined to meet the accreditation requirements; those courses will not count toward the Masters of Architecture degree.
