ABOUT US


The UL Department of Performing Arts offers professional training within the context of a comprehensive liberal arts education garnering a broad field of study while grounded in core training. The program’s goal is to develop disciplined and versatile artists through balanced study within their chosen major, complemented and reinforced by a diverse range of theoretical studies and performance opportunities. The graduating student will be socially aware, entrepreneurial in spirit and able to successfully navigate an artist’s life.

The Department of Performing Arts at UL is a highly regarded program where exceptional faculty bridge academic and professional work. The faculty is comprised of a team of artists and scholars who have extensive professional performing experience and academic credentials. Working as an ensemble with aligned sensibilities and a collaborative approach, the faculty offers students an atmosphere where they are nurtured and stimulated in their quest for artistic achievement, technical mastery and scholarly excellence.

During four years as an undergraduate in the UL Department of Performing Arts, students have the opportunity to develop and refine their skills as actors, dancers, directors, choreographers or designers and continue wherever their inspiration and abilities lead them. The study of the performing arts at UL is intensive and the emphasis on liberal arts within a laboratory context is unique.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Department of Performing Arts is to educate and train artists and scholars, while providing for its students a foundation of professionalism and dedication to their art within a climate of diversity, discovery, and innovation. It strives to develop in its students and audiences an enduring passion for theatre and dance as well as deeper learning of the human condition.

To ensure the fusion of education and training, the Department promotes close collaboration among theatre and dance, as well as interdisciplinary cooperation with departments and programs on this and other campuses. It integrates the latest technology in classes and productions. The faculty is composed of dedicated practicing artists, teachers, and scholars who are committed to research and creative activity.
